Become a volunteer companion for an older adult and enrich both your lives!

Benefits:

  • Satisfaction of helping someone who is isolated and in need of friendship.
  • Enrich your life through friendship with an elder.
  • Make new friends by participating in ElderFriends activities for volunteers and elders.
  • Gain skills through initial training session and optional workshops on aging issues.

Qualifications:

  • Desire to establish friendship with an isolated elder.
  • Effective communication skills: ability to listen attentively and initiate conversation.
  • Sensitivity to needs of isolated elder facing difficult life circumstances.

Commitments:

  • Visit an isolated elder at least twice a month for one year.
  • Time and days are flexible, based on needs of elder and availability of volunteer.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Visit isolated elders at least twice a month and maintain consistent contact.
  • Assist elder in meeting needs by working together with the older adult, social service network, and ElderFriends staff.
  • Keep in contact with ElderFriends regarding progress of relationship, elder's needs, and changes in circumstances.

Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Attend initial training session
  • Pass background check
  • Submit at least two references

Mel and Tom have been visiting for over a year and share a great friendship that includes talking, playing cards and periodic outings. Last year they enjoyed an evening of jazz at a local venue in Seattle.
